Choose an internet speed for the activities your household does at the same time. Start with those tasks, check both download and upload capacity, and compare plans available at your address. Counting every device you own is less useful than identifying what is actively using the connection.

Write down a realistic busy-hour combination: perhaps two people watching television while someone joins a video meeting. A sleeping smart speaker and a television playing a 4K stream do not create the same demand. Include large downloads, cloud backups and connected cameras if they run during that period.
For one example, Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K. For a planning example, adding Netflix’s recommendations for two simultaneous 4K streams gives 30 Mbps of download capacity for the streams alone. That calculation covers the streams only; it is not a recommendation to buy a 30 Mbps household plan. Other activity and changing connection performance need room too.
For video meetings, check the current requirements of the application and meeting mode you use. Sending your camera video and sharing files also use upload capacity, so a large advertised download number does not answer the whole question.
Use a short household worksheet
- What runs together? List simultaneous streams, meetings, games, backups and downloads rather than the total number of connected devices.
- Which task is failing? Record buffering, slow file transfers, interrupted calls or a weak connection in one room. These need different checks.
- What does each application need? Use its official guidance, including upload requirements and the selected video quality.
- What does the available plan provide? Save its Broadband Facts label and written terms. Record typical download and upload speeds, latency, price and data allowance where shown.
Do not turn a missing figure into zero or assume that the largest speed tier solves every problem. If the provider does not give you enough information to compare an important requirement, ask before ordering.
Check Wi-Fi before paying for a faster plan
A speed test describes a connection to a particular device at a particular time. AT&T's performance disclosure identifies Wi-Fi distance and device capabilities among the factors affecting the connection. A poor result in a distant room does not, by itself, establish that your internet plan is too slow.
Use the internet speed test to record a baseline. Where your equipment allows it, compare a wired test near the router with a test on the device and in the room where the problem happens. Keep the device, test service and background activity as consistent as possible. If only one room performs poorly, investigate that connection before purchasing a higher speed tier. If results remain poor across connections, take the measurements to your provider.
Compare cost after you identify the requirement
Compare two plans that meet the needs you recorded. Check the quoted monthly total, required equipment, installation charges, promotional end date and any usage conditions. The broadband consumer-label rules provide the framework for the plan information providers display; the relevant label and written offer are the practical documents to request.
You can use our internet provider directory to continue comparing options. Confirm service and the final terms for your exact address before ordering. This worksheet is a comparison method, not an address-level availability result or a guarantee of performance.
