2. Compare the real rate
Look at the price per kWh at your actual usage (500 / 1,000 / 2,000 kWh), not just the headline number — tiered plans can jump between brackets.
3. Sign up online
Your new provider handles the switch with the utility. There is no service interruption and no technician visit.
Who can shop for electricity?
About 85% of Texas is deregulated, including Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Corpus Christi, and much of West Texas. Some cities are served by a single municipal or co-op utility and cannot switch — notably San Antonio (CPS Energy), Austin (Austin Energy), and El Paso (El Paso Electric). Outside Texas, states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Maryland also let you choose your supplier. If your area is regulated, the comparison above simply won't return plans for your ZIP.
