Fiber-optic internet can refer to a connection delivered over optical fiber to a home or business. When shopping, establish whether fiber reaches your premises, which plan is available there and what installation requires. The word "fiber" in an advertisement does not answer all three questions.

The FCC's technology definitions distinguish fiber to the premises from coaxial cable or hybrid fiber-coaxial service. Its fiber-to-the-premises category reaches the home or business end user and excludes fiber to the curb. Ask the provider which technology applies to the actual offer at your address.
This distinction describes the connection, not a guarantee of a particular speed. Two fiber offers can have different service terms. Read the plan's own download and upload information rather than assuming that all fiber plans have identical specifications.
Use address evidence, then obtain an orderable offer
The FCC's National Broadband Map shows availability reported by providers and supports address searches. It is a useful research source, with a process for challenging inaccurate information. A map entry is not an installation appointment or a final provider quote.
Confirm the complete street address and unit number with the provider. Ask whether the plan can be ordered now, whether additional work is needed and when the service could be activated. Keep "reported on a map", "provider confirmed" and "installation booked" as separate answers on your checklist.
Ask about installation before committing
- Access: Will a technician need to enter the property, and what access must you arrange?
- Work: Does this location need new wiring or other installation work? Obtain the provider's explanation rather than assuming an existing outlet is suitable.
- Equipment: Which devices are provided, which may you supply, and what charges or return obligations apply?
- Placement: Where will the internet equipment be installed, and how will your working and viewing locations connect to it?
- Timing: What activation date is confirmed, and what is the next step if that date changes?
For renters, check the property's requirements before authorizing installation work. These questions help uncover the terms of a specific installation; they are not claims that every fiber order requires a technician or a particular fee.
Keep the home network in the comparison
The connection into the property and the connection to a device are different parts of the experience. AT&T's performance disclosure describes factors including home wiring, Wi-Fi, equipment and destination servers that affect end-to-end performance. Fiber service does not establish that every room or device will achieve an advertised speed.
After installation, record results where you work and watch, and compare a supported wired connection with your normal Wi-Fi setup. If one location performs poorly, investigate that part of the connection. Ask the provider to explain a persistent service problem rather than assuming another speed tier is the only answer.
Choose a plan after identifying the need
Use our speed-needs worksheet to identify simultaneous tasks. Then compare the quoted full monthly cost, upload and download capacity, data conditions and contract terms of the available offers. Our provider directory is a starting point for researching providers; exact-address availability and the final written offer still need confirmation.
A useful fiber decision has three pieces of evidence: the right connection at the right address, a plan suited to the household, and installation arrangements you understand. None can be inferred from the technology name alone.
